Late Shift – The Team Development Simulation
Successful collaboration takes more than good intentions – it requires overcoming challenges together, leveraging different perspectives, making decisions, and learning from their consequences.
Late Shift is an interactive, film-based simulation that brings decision-making under pressure to life, providing valuable insights into how teams can collaborate more effectively, improve their collective decision-making, and develop into high-performing teams.
Organizations invest significant resources in developing their teams. They foster communication, collaboration, trust, and conflict management skills.
Yet knowing what effective collaboration looks like does not necessarily mean being able to work effectively as a team.
In everyday business, teams must make decisions despite incomplete information, time pressure, and competing opinions, interests, and priorities.
Who takes the initiative? Who listens? Whose arguments prevail? How are different perspectives taken into account? And how can team members take collective responsibility?

The challenge: Teams often only recognize how their collaboration affects the quality of their decisions once the consequences become apparent.
This is where simulation-based learning offers a distinct advantage: Late Shift allows participants to make decisions under pressure and uncertainty, experience their consequences firsthand, and reflect on their own thinking and behavior – without the risks of real-world business situations.
Participants identify different decision-making and behavioral patterns, compare their experiences, and jointly develop alternative approaches.
Individual learning experiences thus become a shared understanding of effective collaboration – creating practical opportunities for better decisions, mutual trust, and a high-performing team culture.

What Makes Late Shift Unique?
A group of people does not automatically become a high-performing team simply because they pursue common goals.
Successful teams are not defined by everyone thinking and acting alike. A true team emerges when people not only recognize their different capabilities and perspectives but deliberately bring them together, support one another, and take collective responsibility for results.
And that is precisely where the challenge lies: Different ways of thinking, personal preferences, and behavioral patterns can complement one another – or lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and ineffective decisions.
Late Shift makes these differences visible and open to reflection through individual decisions and five professional roles. It provides a foundation for understanding what each team member can contribute, where mutual support is needed, and how individual strengths can create collective impact.
Because a team's performance is not determined by the sum of individual strengths – but by how effectively those strengths are brought together.
Late Shift combines individual learning experiences with a structured development process for the entire team.
Building a High-Performing Team
1. Individual Simulation – Experience Decision-Making
Each team member completes Late Shift independently, making decisions under time pressure and uncertainty and experiencing their consequences.
2. Personal Report – Identify Preferences
Individual decisions are analyzed and presented in a personal report based on five professional roles: Team Player, Organizer, Analyzer, Influencer, and Problem Solver.
3. Team Assessment – Understand Differences and Potential
In the first team workshop, individual insights are brought together. The team explores how different preferences complement one another, where capabilities may be missing, and which behavioral patterns support or hinder collaboration.
4. Team Development – Shape Collaboration
Building on these insights, the team works to improve how its members collaborate. Depending on the team's needs, the focus may include roles and responsibilities, communication, trust, conflict management, decision-making processes, or shared performance goals.
Appropriate methods and modern collaboration formats are used to support this development.
5. Practical Application – Put New Behaviors into Practice
Agreed changes and development initiatives are implemented in everyday work. Through short development cycles – similar to sprints – the team tests new approaches and gains practical experience of their impact.
Regular reviews and retrospectives help make progress visible, identify obstacles, and adjust approaches where necessary.
6. High-Performance Development – Evaluate Impact and Drive Improvement
Through further workshops and regular reviews, the team evaluates its development against jointly defined criteria, such as decision quality, mutual support, accountability, collaboration, and goal achievement.
Effective behaviors are reinforced, new development areas are identified, and further improvement cycles are agreed upon.

Decision-Making Behavior & Role Preferences

In Late Shift, you take on the role of Matt, a mathematics student who becomes unwillingly involved in a high-stakes robbery.
The simulation challenges you to make decisions under time pressure, with your choices influencing how the story unfolds and how other characters react.
Your individual decisions form the basis of a personal report that reveals your preferred ways of thinking and acting across five professional roles.
The assessment shows the relative distribution of preferred roles, providing valuable insights for reflecting on individual behavioral and decision-making patterns.
The aim is not to assign people to fixed roles or make definitive judgments about their capabilities.
What matters most is how different preferences complement one another within the team:
-
Where can team members best contribute their strengths?
-
Where do they need support?
-
And which capabilities and perspectives may not yet be fully utilized?

Late Shift features 180 decision points (options) across different storylines. Each playthrough takes you on a unique journey through the story.
These decisions fall into three categories:
-
Strategic Decisions: Weigh alternatives, assess risks, and take responsibility.
-
Interpersonal Decisions: Build trust, involve others, and navigate differences.
-
Everyday Reactions: Strengthen relationships through words and actions, prevent misunderstandings, or resolve conflicts.
Not only major decisions but also small everyday behaviors influence how effectively we work together.

Where Else Can Late Shift Add Value?
Conflict Identification & Resolution
Understand Differences.
Resolve Conflicts Constructively.
Why do different perspectives and behavioral patterns repeatedly lead to misunderstandings and conflicts? And how can these differences be turned into opportunities for constructive collaboration?
Through individual decisions and role preferences, Late Shift provides a foundation for reflecting on different ways of thinking and behaving. Building on these insights, teams can identify the underlying causes of conflict, develop mutual understanding, and learn to manage tensions constructively.
Your Added Value: Earlier identification of potential conflicts, stronger conflict management capabilities, and more sustainable solutions through mutual understanding and constructive dialogue.
Error & Learning Culture
Reflect on Decisions.
Learn from Mistakes Together.
How do teams deal with poor decisions? Do they collectively examine the underlying causes and apply what they have learned – or do justification and blame take priority?
Late Shift allows participants to experience the consequences of their individual decisions firsthand. These experiences provide a starting point for reflecting on how mistakes are handled and developing a culture where openness, feedback, and collective learning become the norm.
Your Added Value: Greater psychological safety, a more constructive approach to mistakes, and a stronger collective capacity for learning and continuous improvement.
Performance & Resilience
Stay Effective Under Pressure.
Achieve High Performance Together.
How do team members respond to time pressure, uncertainty, and unexpected challenges? And how can they support one another to maintain high performance even under demanding conditions?
Late Shift reveals different decision-making and behavioral preferences in challenging situations. Building on these insights, teams can analyze how they collaborate under pressure, make better use of their resources, and develop strategies for managing stress and change.
Your Added Value: Greater collective effectiveness, stronger mutual support, and enhanced team resilience and adaptability.
